Parish Organizations

Ladies Guild Member (Pat Pirich)

The Ladies Guild is open to all women of the parish. Our purpose is to encourage closer friendship and spiritual growth among members; to aid the pastor; to cooperate with the Parish Pastoral Council in their work and function; and to give assistance to projects the members select. These projects make it possible for us to contribute in many ways to the St. Barnabas community. The Ladies Guild meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 11:30 am.

Knights of Columbus (George Moody)

This is an organization of Catholic men that supports families of the Catholic Church and the community. Members teach the values of faith, charity, unity and patriotism. The Knights of Columbus began in 1882 when a small group of Catholics founded a society designed to provide security for widows and orphans of Catholic parishioners. It has become an order of Catholic men and their families, dedicated to the concepts of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. The Knights conduct a variety of activities that support youth, families, the church and the disadvantaged in the community, especially the mentally retarded and physically handicapped. Membership is open to any practicing Catholic male, age 18 or older.

Squires

The aim of the Columbian Squires similarly: “to prepare Catholic young men to become leaders among their fellow citizens”. Leadership training takes place in four activities areas: spiritual, circle, membership and service. The spiritual activities committee of the circle is responsible for planning programs of a religious nature, like retreats, visits to seminaries, vocations related programs, monthly Squire-parents Masses and others. The Columbian Squires offers every young man opportunities to help himself while he is helping others in his parish and his community.

St. Vincent de Paul Member (Judith Gilreath, 684-6098)

The society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organization of lay persons. founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam and his companions. Placed under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul, it derives its inspiration from his thinking and work, and seeks in a spirit of justice and charity, by a person-to-person involvement of its members, to help those who are suffering. Volunteers call on people who need help with groceries or assistance with paying a bill. They go out in pairs to visit clients in their homes. Others are called on an as-needed basis to do basic jobs. Financial support is always welcome! We meet at St. Barnabas every Monday evening from 7:00-8:00 pm to review new cases.

St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home Visits

How about spending one hour or less a week or bi-weekly making a resident of a nursing home or a homebound parishioner happy? It’s so easy and so fulfilling. At your convenience, you can visit someone at a nursing home or at their home and spend quality time with them by listening, chatting, or playing a game, or saying some prayers with them.

Peace and Justice Group (Cathie Stout, 684-6098)

The goals of the Peace and Justice Committee are to deepen one’s faith and relationship to God, self, and others by reflection on Scripture and shared prayer, to become aware of social justice issues in our world, nation, and state, and to respond to these issues by finding ways to change structures that keep people in oppression, poverty, and life-threatening situations. Some of the issues we address are International Abolition of land mines, Abolition of the Death Penalty, Fair minimum wage policy, Medications for the elderly, affordable housing and health care for children. Actions include attending conferences and workshops, writing to senators and congressmen and attending county meetings. The committee meets as needed.
